The Hangout Hostel in Lake City, Colorado, is a hidden gem for hikers and backpackers alike. It's a place where you can truly unwind and relax after an arduous journey, and it has quickly become a favorite among those traversing the CDT (Continental Divide Trail).
The Incredible Shrinking Hulk's Reward
Our hero, Hulk, after an intense hike from Pogosa Springs to Lake City, decided to treat himself to a well-deserved break at the Hangout Hostel. The journey was no easy feat, with challenging climbs, a risky traverse, and a significant weight loss of 30 pounds along the way. Hulk's Nashville Pack, once a 30L capacity, now feels lighter on his back.
Lake City: A Charming Trail Town
Lake City is a walker's paradise, with everything within easy reach. It boasts a hiker-friendly center, a lively saloon, and a restaurant called Euphoria, conveniently located below the hostel. The general store is just a stone's throw away, making it incredibly convenient for hikers to stock up on supplies.
The Hangout Hostel: A Home Away from Home
The hostel itself is a haven, offering a cozy and comfortable stay. With only two bunk rooms and a total of eight beds, it provides an intimate and friendly atmosphere. The facilities are top-notch, including two bathrooms with showers, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable seating areas. The views from the big windows are breathtaking, and the stocked hiker boxes and town clothes add a touch of luxury to the hiking experience. The owner, who also runs Euphoria, is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making guests feel right at home.
What makes the Hangout Hostel truly exceptional is the attention to detail. From personal hygiene supplies to books, games, and maps, it has everything a hiker could possibly need. The large deck is the perfect spot to unwind and take in the mountain views. It's no wonder Hulk had such a wonderful stay and even had the place to himself for the first night!
Lake City's Charm and Outdoor Adventures
Lake City is a town that exudes charm and character. With its historic district dating back to 1874, it's like stepping back in time. The log cabin homes and historic houses add to its unique appeal. But it's not just a pretty face; Lake City offers a plethora of outdoor activities. From ATV trails in the mountains to fishing, hunting, and hiking, there's something for every adventure seeker. The surrounding mountains provide a stunning backdrop for these activities, and the camping opportunities are abundant.
Moving On: The Journey Continues
While Lake City and the Hangout Hostel have provided a much-needed respite, it's time for Hulk to continue his journey. The next destination is Salida, a hundred miles away, where the Colorado climbs will continue to challenge and the views will remain breathtaking. The journey ahead promises more epic adventures and memories to be made.
In my opinion, the Hangout Hostel and Lake City represent the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. It's a place where hikers can recharge their batteries and prepare for the next leg of their journey. The hospitality, comfort, and convenience offered by the hostel and the town make it an unforgettable stop along the trail. As Hulk embarks on the next phase of his adventure, we can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lies ahead.
